Received: Revised: Accepted: May 29, 2013 September 15, 2013 September 18, 2013 The effects of resveratrol on arsenic trioxide-induced oxidative stress and arsenic efflux in spleen were determined in Wistar rats exposed to arsenic trioxide (As2O3). Wistar rats were segregated into four groups: control (0.9% normal saline), As2O3treated (2 mg/kg for 7 days, i.p.), resveratrol+As2O3-treated, resveratrol-treated (5 mg/kg for 7 days, i.p.). Spleen was analyzed for lipid peroxidation, antioxidant enzyme activities, glutathione redox system and arsenic accumulation. Arsenic treatment showed significant increases in the malondialdehyde, reactive oxygen species and arsenic accumulation in spleen. Furthermore, arsenic treatment decreased significantly activity of superoxide dismutase and total glutathione/ oxidized glutathione ratio. However, treatment with resveratrol to arsenic-treated rats reduced oxidative stress and improved arsenic efflux. These findings may provide the potential strategy for arsenic-induced spleen toxicity and As2O3 as a single agent causing toxic effects. ©2013 PVJ. All rights reserved

Protective effect of resveratrol on arsenic trioxide-induced nephrotoxicity in rats
BACKGROUD/OBEJECTIVES Arsenic, which causes human carcinogenicity, is ubiquitous in the environment. This study was designed to evaluate modulation of arsenic induced cancer by resveratrol, a phytoalexin found in vegetal dietary sources that has antioxidant and chemopreventive properties, in arsenic trioxide (As2O3)-induced Male Wistar rats. MATERIALS/METHODS Adult rats received 3 mg/kg As2O3...
متن کاملThe Protective Role of Resveratrol against Arsenic Trioxide-Induced Cardiotoxicity
Arsenic trioxide (As2O3) shows substantial anticancer activity in patients with acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL). Unfortunately, limiting the application of this effective agent to APL patients is severe cardiotoxicity. Resveratrol, the natural food-derived polyphenolic compound, is well known for its antioxidant properties and protects the cardiovascular system. But the potential role of res...
متن کاملProtective Effects of Eugenol against Hepatotoxicity Induced by Arsenic Trioxide: An Antileukemic Drug
Background: Arsenic trioxide (As2O3) has shown effectiveness in the treatment of leukemia, but it is also associated with hepatotoxicity. Given antileukemic drug-induced oxidative stress and toxicity, this study focused on the mitigatory role of eugenol, a monoterpene compound from clove oil, in the hepatic tissue of Wistar rats. Methods: Twenty-four male Wistar rats (180–250 g) were randomly di...
متن کاملThe hepatoprotective and antioxidant effects of Curcumin and N-acetylcysteine in rats exposed to arsenic
Introduction: Arsenic is a highly toxic element that is widely distributed in environment. Antioxidants depletion and oxidative stress is now considered as one of the possible mechanisms of arsenic-induced toxicity. N-acetylcysteine (NAC) and Curcumin (Cur) are potential antioxidants that can compensate the depletion of antioxidants. This study aimed to compare the hepatoprotective effect of Cu...

To evaluate the protective effect of Zataria multiflora boiss. (Zm) extract against arsenic-induced oxidative damage in rats. Rats were orally treated with various doses of Zm (200, 400, and 600 mg/kg) and sodium arsenite (5.5 mg/ kg), alone or in combination, once daily for 30 consecutive days. Twenty-four hours after the last dose, rats were euthanized, and biochemical studies were conducted ...
